PDFs in Windows 8 Rage

Fury over the way Windows 8 handles pdfs finally engulfed me today when I got copy back for revision.
The editor sent it in pdf format, as they always do. The logical thing to do is open it in a new window, open the original word processed document in a window to the side, and write. Comparing one document with another is easy. Just like you would with pieces of paper on your desk. That is why the desktop metaphor is so powerful.
But Windows 8 doesn't do it like that. It opens pdfs in Reader, which occupies the whole screen with no other option. So you can't compare it with another document.
This is irritating enough - why shouldn't I be able to open a pdf in a window? Just give me ONE REASON. ONE FUCKING REASON.
But it is when you try to replace the enraging and useless Reader with another default programme that things get evil, in the sneaky way that Microsoft gets evil.
None of the options presented in the list work - you can't open pdfs in Picture Viewer. So you look at the other options and there is Internet Explorer but not Chrome or Firefox. Why not? Because they are Microsoft's enemies, of course.
I wanted to crack on so I selected IE.
This was a surprise.
It doesn't work. IE flashes on and off again in a blink.
This may be just the way my machine is set up, of course, but it is alarming that even MS software won't cooperate.
So, after many loud swears, I finally managed to locate Chrome on the 'Open with...' menu. It works a treat. I can finally use pdfs on the desktop as God intended in his infinite mercy and wisdom.
Eagle-eyed readers may notice that the word processor is in fact Evernote, so this particular operation is happening entirely in the cloud. This make me think that perhaps it is time to make the jump skywards.
I want a Chromebox.
