Today the rage reached 'action now' level. A quick Google search revealed that this is quite a common problem. Jucheck is legit but can conceal a virus, and removing it won't do any harm.
Of course, I couldn't find it in any of the recommended places and searching the files system in Windows 8 is a nightmare. Then the lightbulb moment - in moving to Windows 8 I had inexplicably forgotten to reinstal my preferred anti-virus software, Avira.
Installing took but a moment (taking care not to include the irritating and unnecessary safe browsing option). The first scan showed my computer is still clean (hooray!) and as a final housekeeping option Avira offered, totally unasked, to disable two items that regularly ask for updates. One was Evernote, but I want Evernote to carry on doing its great work thanks very much. The other was....Jucheck! One click and it is off my case for ever, I hope. Result.
